This is a fascinating etymology lesson about the word "cancel" in its current popular context. I think @MariaHill in particular will appreciate it, but others probably will too.

Nile Rodgers, who wrote the song where the term has its roots, had it used against him, almost certainly by someone who had no idea.

American English, like so many other parts of our culture, wouldn't be what it is without Black people. This might be the first time a word we got from AAVE has been so remarkably weaponized by right-wing extremists.


Their favorite new word is "woke." They haven't the faintest idea what it means but they think it makes them sound important. Those with nothing to say often try to appropriate words they hear other people use to help them feel better about themselves.
