Welcome to Mastodon and thanks to any new followers.
I hope you give the place a good chance. There's a bit of a learning curve but it's well worth it.
For new accounts, I recommend checking out @feditips
They've been posting all day to help new accounts adjust to the platform.
I worry about changes there since I got some of the fastest tornado warnings and other government info from the platform. I also worry because I imagine that in many countries it is the most trustworthy source of information about their local political situation etc.
It's definitely concerning.
Elon Musk is one of the last people I'd trust to do anything but use it for ego massage.
I enjoyed my time there. I had a good account for many years. But the abuse of the platform by bots, etc., became ridiculous. Twitter didn't do enough then. Certainly won't now.
Free, reliable information is vital to society. This is where capitalism really, really fails.
I am definitely not defending Elon, but I was glad that one of his proclamations is that he is going to do something about bots and I am not trying to glorify Twitter either as until it ended up causing J6 it was a cesspool and it hasn't gotten much better it seems as they allowed the insurrectionists to suspend me via their mass reporting popular accounts doing OSINT. I am glad for the shakeup is really what I am glad of because business-as-usual was BAD business.
We got mass reported a lot, too. I know someone else that just happened to recently, also, but she decided to leave social media altogether.
If he does something, good. His fans are really the worst, though. He'd probably knock out a lot of his own followers if he did address it.
Shoot search brought up wrong picture. I swear the thumbnail picture was this. I should probably delete and retweet that other one.
Actually, i just did a whole separate Toot with the picture and the same text as my reply. I'll keep my error in your thread (are they called threads on Mastodon?)
I'm really bad at reading things off my own instance sometimes.
I need to be better about that. I can find it.
@TonyStark I recently started using MSN as a social media platform to push climate action and I am terrible at hitting send with typos in the comments. It is so critical to time them on there to be fresh when the stories first come out so that they float to top of people's feed.
One reason I am nervous about Mastodon. I have enjoyed how laid back it is.
@TonyStark I see that I forgot to include the modifying clause that I am nervous about Mastodon's rapid growth not Mastodon in general.
@TonyStark And speaking about my poor social media proofreading policy: Here is example of my poor proofreading that I saved since the reply is a prime example of much of the conservative frame of mind here in USA in 2022.
I reckon I rephrased my comment without adjusting for the change everywhere, but the point got across a little bit, I guess. I don't know if the reply was an attempt at humor, but I have always maintained that sarcasm doesn't work on social media crowds that are primed and ready for it from the author.
This is the most positive take i've seen about Musk's twitter takeover.
Though I also think one might want to be deleting all their critical of musk & associated companies tweets.
And I think Black twitter has significantly more reason to be worried.
Hopefully we should be on safer ground as the ratio of human beings to members is much higher on the Fediverse.
Bots would (hopefully!) find it tougher surviving on here 🤞
Also, as no one owns the network, it's more difficult for any single actor to influence it.
@TonyStark @GreenFire @feditips I agree, I have just joined Mastodon because I am worried about Musk's goals. I do not wish to pay for a social medial site, especially to a person who is too rich already (and who I think should be doing something for the planet with his money). I think controls will go and Trump will re-appear on his favourite platform. Hope not, but who knows?
@Melinda It's nice here. I'm still figuring things out like local and federal stream, but I think that also depends on how we view our feed, if app/mobile/web site. I'll need to do a bit of googling.
Hey Tony (and other mods) while I have your attention: in my climate actiivism after we started the youth movement the Direct Messages on Twitter were probably where we lost most of our activists to bad actors because they could talk privately. I am not certain that private messages are a good idea on social media.
