@chewbacca In New Orleans, they destroyed the black Main St of Claiborne in Treme by deliberately running the I-10 overpass down it in 1965.

In Buffalo, it’s one of the few large public spaces near a major metro downtown area and Humboldt Parkway was the spine of emerging black middle-class neighborhood of Hamlin Park in the 1950s.

As was done in many other cities across the country, the construction of highways cut through predominantly Black neighborhoods and served to displace and disconnect communities which led to the continuation of redlining. And Buffalo was no exception. Furthermore, these interventions undercut economic opportunities and activity within neighborhoods by allowing traffic to bypass city neighborhoods for new auto-centric development. The legacy of these roadways has further created environmental justice concerns where low-income and minority communities are now subjected to high volumes of car and truck emissions."

Hey all,

I wanted to pass along some word written by a colleague of mine on the history of racial segregation that formed the backdrop to the Buffalo shooting. There's a reason why he knew Black people would be shopping at that Tops:

"I want to share how our work in Equitable Housing connects to communities like the one on Buffalo’s east side. Horrific tragedy aside, the below NYT article highlights a couple of intersections that you may not be familiar with. Unfortunately, I’ve seen and documented communities like this across the country – albeit in another life. However, I was fortunate to visit this Buffalo neighborhood a few times (prior to the building of the TOPS market – but the planning was underway). Community leaders there gave me the grand tour of the neighborhood and historic Humboldt Parkway which, if you recognize the name Frederick Olmstead, is the landscape architect known for NY’s Central Park and the U.S. Capitol design...."

This new bill is obviously devastating for anyone who needs abortion care. However, this law would also have devastating--and potentially deadly--impacts to others who are not seeking traditional abortion care. Notably, the law prohibits the use of the procedure except to save the life of the mother "in a medical emergency"-- an undefined term.

One example: under this law, a doctor may decide not treat a woman experiencing a missed miscarriage, instead forcing her to wait until the (nonviable) tissue expels itself--possibly risking sepsis and death. As another example, the doctor may decide not to treat an ectopic pregnancy until the mother is experiencing a "medical emergency"--again, whatever that term means--imposing severe risk on the mother. This is about as anti-life as it gets.

If the Dems put forth a viable solution to end world hunger, the GOP would object. Guaranteed.

Seriously, that is pretty much it.

A connected view is that Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Trump, were "installed by god."

Of course, funny, they never said that about Carter, LBJ, Clinton, Obama etc, and now Biden. They only think "god put him there" when it is one of their guys, like magic.

They couldn't even fake it for a measly $28 million.

I don't know what to say. Kansas Supreme Court has reinforced disenfranchisement. The sad thing is the individual in charge is likely going to beat the very reasonable Gov. Kelly all because some individuals feel the need to not wear a mask and didn't like being made to wear one.

Am I defeated? No way. I have faith in the next generation and potentially not as younger ones.

The world is a scary place, y'all. Things are getting worse all the time.

The actions of an individual don't really amount to a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things, but we're not an individual, we're individuals.

We're a community. We're a movement. We fix things, we make the world better.

Let's demonstrate what a better world might be like. Let's live like we are the first generation of the next world, rather than the last generation of the old world.

The problem is that Alito and company don’t really believe that all people are imbued with equal rights.

They insist that no constitutional rights exist other than ones that they say point to hundreds of years of "historical" support, while they cite men who rationalized abuse and endorsed the doctrine of coverture (women had no separate legal existence from their husbands.)

Roe didn't break America, but Alito is.

The one thing I disagree with in the article is that Democrats potentially aren't up to the job of providing a response. When I see Democrats across the country acting legislatively and with their voices, I believe we are up to the job. As far as the U.S. Congress goes, we need to provide solid Democratic majorities in the Senate and House to deliver that. We have a chance to do that on November 8th.

The real issue with gun safety is that the gun lobby knows deep down that their position is wrong. If they were confident that their right to own and use guns was solidly rooted in common sense and in sound arguments, they'd feel secure in that right, and they would be more amenable to reasonable 'management' of that right, such as a minimum age for gun ownership, proper background checks, licensing, and storing/use regulations.

Confident in their right, they would not oppose reasonable limits. Lots of gun owners don't oppose that.

If lots of guns made us safer, we'd be the safest country in the world. We aren't.

Opinion | Gun sales have exploded. Funny, that didn’t make us all safer.

10 years from now, either the Republican Party will be dead or American democracy will be dead. It's that simple.

And which way we go will be largely decided in elections this year and in 2024.

Please, everyone, do your part to help America make the right choice.

The department says it will be seeking termination of Foster and he may face criminal prosecution.

Good. Now clean the rest of your house NYSDOC. This is not 'one bad apple'. This is common behavior from many COs at Attica. If this had been before he retired 10 years ago, I'd have to double check to see if it was my racist uncle.

The good people of Pennsylvania could vote in Democrat Josh Shapiro, who, as the state’s attorney general, went after pedophile priests—what with pedophilia being so important to the conservative Republican extremists, you’d think they’d vote for the guy who’s actually done something about it.
